MEDITERRANEAN DIET - Mediterranean food

The "mediterranean diet" refers to the dietary habits practiced in the 60's by the countryside population in the olive tree cultivation areas in Crete and in mid- and southern Italy.

By eating less meat, more bread, a lot of vegetables and fish, olive or rapeseed oil, daily portions of fruit, and by replacing butter and cream with rapeseed-oil based margarine, the risk of heart disease and cancer can be significantly lowered.
Individuals without alcohol problems can add a glass of red wine per day.

Today experts agree that all components of the mediterranean diet work together to show positive health effects - particularly in that they provide an increased protection towards coronary heart disease and various cancers such as breast or colon cancer.
