Human-Papilloma-Virus (HPV)
There are two groups of
HPV viruses:
- "Low Risk HPV Types"
(types 6,11,42,43 and 44)
cause harmless however usually persistent warts
(Condyloma acuminata).
- "High Risk HPV Types"
(types 16,18, 31-35, 51-52)
cause significant cellular
growth impairment and - without treatment - may cause
cancer of the cervix in approx.. 2% of the cases.
HPV Test
Recently developed molecular-biological methods (= HPV hybridizing by means of
PCR)
help to detect and categorize infections with HPV viruses. By recognizing High Risk HPV infections,
a possible future risk of contracting cancer can be detected
early.
