CHORIONIC VILLI BIOPSY(CVS)

Technology

The chorionic villi biopsy usually takes place between the 10th and 12th week of pregnancy. Prior to that the development of the embryonic organs is not complete.
Cells of the placenta are extracted via a thin needle through the abdominal wall (or rarely by means of a catheter through the cervical canal) under constant ultrasonic observation.
This ambulatory operation which is only slightly painful takes place in a special prenatal clinic and takes only a few minutes.

Results

A preliminary result showing the number of chromosomes is available after 1 to 2 days.
This short term analysis is then confirmed via a check-up.

Advantages

In comparison to amniocentesis  CVS can thus show substantially earlier if there are any chromosomal abnormalities.
