RUBELLA (GERMAN MEASLES) (PARVOVIRUS B-19-INFECTION)

The Parvovirus B-19 is extremely contagious and predominantly occurs in children.

A typical symptom of this disease, which is harmless for children and adults, is a red rash on the cheeks and body, shaped like a garland and brighter in the middle.

If as may seldom happen that a pregnant woman contracts the disease for the first time, the unborn baby may be at risk for:

  • a miscarriage
  • development of severe anemia
  • (anemia) and edema (hydrops).

Rubella in pregnancy

If rubella is determined in a pregnant woman, the baby must be put under close supervision over a period of 10 weeks by means of repeated ultrasonic examinations every 10 to 14 days.

85% of all pregnancies with acute B19-infections run their course normally, i.e. in most cases the health of the child will not be affected even if the mother comes down with an acute infection!
