Effect:
A round soft rubber membrane (diameter of 6-10 cm or less) with a
flexible edge is inserted into the upper part of the vagina
- between the pubis and the rear end of the
vagina. There it seals the cervix and prevents
sperms from passing into the uterus.
Advantages:
- Application only if necessary.
- Can be applied up
to two hours before sexual intercourse.
- It is up to "her" to use
this contraceptive method.
Disadvantages:
- Medium security:
Pearl index
5 - 10 . Only when placed
correctly prior to sexual intercourse and with the additional use of spermicidal
cream is the reliability comparable to the condom
.
- Removal of the diaphragm at the earliest
after 6 to 8 hours after sexual intercourse (then all sperms are
definitely destroyed).
- Higher risk of vaginitis.
- The size of the diaphragm is very important; adjustment
by the physician necessary.
- Despite thicker material, there is less
protection against infections compared to the condom since the lower
part of the vagina is completely unprotected !
Suitable for...
- For all
women, who rarely or irregularly need contraceptives without the necessity
of high reliability.
Not suitable for...
- Women with recurring
vaginitis.
- Women with anomalies
of the vagina or uterus.
- Women with dropped vagina
and/or uterus.
Summary:
- The diaphragm, like
the condom, is not an extremely safe method of
contraception.
- It
is suitable in cases of rare sexual intercourse combined
with a relatively low need of reliability.
