Reliability of a contraceptive method is
indicated by the Pearl index
. This refers to a sample of one hundred women who use a
particular contraceptive method.
An index
of 1 means that, per year, one of these
one hundred women will nevertheless become pregnant. The perfect method has therefore an
index of 0, whereas using no contraception at all has
an index of 80 (80% become pregnant the first year)..
Very
reliable methods: less than 1
Secure methods: 1-3
Quite secure methods: 3-5
Methods with middle levels of security: 5-10
Unreliable methods: 10 - 40
- Coitus Interruptus (withdrawal
method)
Costs:
Since the beginning
of 2004 all means of contraception must be privately covered,
the health insurance companies do not usually pay.
Only for
young women up to 20 years of
age may contraceptives (e.g. the pill) be prescribed.
